What Telegram can hide

Only what Telegram passes on

The official Telegram Bot API gives no access to hidden account data. A bot sees exactly what Telegram sends it, nothing more.

Not every @username

An arbitrary user or someone else’s bot cannot always be resolved from a username alone: data comes back when the object is public or already known to the bot.

A private link is not a Chat ID

An invite link such as t.me/+… is not a way to obtain a Chat ID. A private group or channel needs another route — for example, adding the bot to it.

Hidden sender

If Telegram did not pass the forward source, the bot says so instead of guessing an ID.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Telegram ID?

Open @SoftLite_ID_bot and press START. The bot returns your Telegram User ID along with the basic account details.

How do I find another user’s Telegram ID?

Forward one of their messages to the bot. If their privacy settings hide the account link on forwarding, Telegram does not pass the ID and it cannot be retrieved.

How do I find a Telegram Group ID?

For a public group, send its @username or t.me link to the bot. For a private group, add the bot to it. A supergroup’s Telegram Group ID starts with -100.

How do I find a Telegram Chat ID?

Chat ID is the general name for the identifier of any chat: private, group or channel. The method is the same — a @username, a public t.me link, or a forwarded message.

How do I find a Telegram Channel ID?

For a public channel, send its @username or t.me link. For a private one, forward any post from the channel. A channel ID also starts with -100.

How do I find a Telegram Bot ID?

Forward a message from that bot, or send its @username. A bot’s ID is the number before the colon in its token.

Can I find an ID from a t.me link?

Yes, if the link is public — the t.me/username form. Private invite links of the t.me/+… form are not resolved by the Bot API.

Can I find the ID of a private group?

Only if the bot has been added to that group. A private invite link on its own does not yield the identifier.

Why is the sender ID hidden in a forwarded message?

Telegram privacy settings allow a user to remove the link to their account when their messages are forwarded. The forward then carries only a name, without an ID.

Does a Telegram ID change?

No. A User ID is permanent: it stays the same when the @username, display name or phone number changes.
