How to Find a Telegram Channel ID
A Telegram Channel ID identifies the channel a bot or application should access. Depending on the channel and tool, this may be a public @username or a numeric ID such as -100....
You may also see the term Telegram Chat ID because the Bot API exposes the channel identifier as chat.id.
What is a Telegram Channel ID?
It tells Telegram exactly which channel the bot should work with. The accepted form depends on whether the channel is public and what the application supports.
The fastest option when setting up SoftLitePOSTBot
You do not need to search for a private channel’s numeric ID manually. Forward any message from your channel in the program interface, and it can identify the channel. This also works for private channels without an @username.
First determine whether the channel is public or private
- Public channel: has a username visible in a
t.me/namelink and can be found in Telegram search. - Private channel: has no username; people normally enter through an invite link, while applications use a numeric identifier.
Public channels: @username and t.me/username
If a channel has a username, @mychannel and https://t.me/mychannel identify the same public channel in two forms. Most publishing tools accept one or both. A numeric ID is usually unnecessary.
Finding a private channel Chat ID through the Bot API
Channel and supergroup IDs are negative and usually begin with -100. If the bot is already in the channel, channel posts can appear in updates under channel_post; the ID is update.channel_post.chat.id.
If appropriate for your setup, forwarding a channel message to the bot can expose a MessageOriginChannel; the identifier is in forward_origin.chat.id, provided Telegram reveals the origin.
Updates arrive through either long polling with getUpdates or a webhook. If a webhook is active, getUpdates will not work until the webhook is removed. Never share a URL containing your bot token: the token grants control of the bot.
Why t.me/+… and joinchat invite links do not work
An invite link is a ticket for a person to join a channel or group. It is not the channel identifier required by the Bot API and does not tell Telegram where a bot should publish.
When to use a username, link, or numeric ID
- Public channel → use
@usernameort.me/username. - Private channel in SoftLitePOSTBot → forward a channel message in the program.
- Private channel in your own integration → obtain the ID through Bot API updates.
- Only an invite link is available → obtain a supported identifier first.
What if the bot cannot access the channel?
A correct ID is not enough: add the bot to the channel as an administrator with permission to post. If publishing still fails, use the channel publishing checklist.
Where the channel ID is used
SoftLitePOSTBot accepts public usernames/links and private numeric IDs, and can detect an ID from a forwarded message. After the channel is identified and the bot has permission, the program can publish prepared posts with text, media, and buttons.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a problem if the channel has no @username?
No. Private channels use a numeric ID.
Are a channel ID and user ID the same?
No. They identify different Telegram objects.
Can I use an invite link instead of an ID?
No. An invite link is not a Bot API publishing target.
Need to find an ID now?
Open Soft Lite ID Bot and send a username, link, or forwarded message. If Telegram does not expose the object that way, the bot explains the limitation.
