How to Find a Telegram Group or Chat ID

The quickest method: open Soft Lite ID Bot, tap Check chat, then Select group. Telegram shares the selected group or supergroup’s numeric Chat ID with the bot.

For a public supergroup, you can also send its @username or normal t.me/username link. A forwarded message works only when Telegram includes the source chat in its origin data.

Open Soft Lite ID Bot

Use Telegram’s group selector

  1. Open @SoftLite_ID_bot and press START.
  2. Tap Check chat.
  3. Tap Select group.
  4. Choose the group in Telegram’s window.

The bot displays the Chat ID, title, object type, and any other available details. This uses Telegram’s official request_chat mechanism.

Use a public username or link

If a supergroup has a public handle, send @groupname or https://t.me/groupname. Soft Lite ID Bot calls getChat and verifies that the result is a group or supergroup.

Basic groups cannot have public usernames. Private invite links such as t.me/+... and joinchat are invitations, not Chat IDs, and the bot does not use them for lookup.

Can a forwarded message reveal the group ID?

Sometimes. If Telegram provides a chat origin, the bot can show that chat’s ID. A normal message forwarded from a group member often identifies only the author, not the original group. A user ID must not be mistaken for a Chat ID.

Use Select group for a predictable result. If the source is absent, the bot explains what Telegram omitted.

Basic groups and supergroups

A basic group is the older group-chat type. Its Bot API identifier is negative.

A supergroup supports more Telegram features and can have a public username. Its Bot API identifier is also negative but comes from a separate range.

Telegram can migrate a basic group to a supergroup when certain features are enabled. That migration creates a new Chat ID, so a stored value may need updating.

Why is a Telegram Chat ID negative?

The sign is part of the Bot API identifier, not an error. Telegram uses separate numeric ranges so applications can distinguish users, basic groups, and channel-style peers.

What does -100 mean?

Bot API IDs for supergroups and channels are derived by adding 1000000000000 to the underlying ID and making the result negative. That is why these values visually begin with -100....

Do not remove the prefix or change the sign. Store the complete value in a 64-bit integer type.

Telegram limitations

  • A private group cannot be reliably resolved from an invite link alone.
  • Forwarded-message metadata does not always contain the original chat.
  • A public username applies to a supergroup, not a basic group.
  • Knowing an ID does not grant message access, membership, or administrator rights.

What is a Chat ID used for?

Bot API methods use Chat IDs to send notifications, address a conversation, inspect members where permitted, and configure moderation or integrations. Each method can impose additional membership and permission requirements.

Quick summary

  • Any selectable group: Check chat → Select group.
  • Public supergroup: send its username or public link.
  • Forwarded message: only if Telegram exposes the source chat.
  • Private invite link: not a Chat ID.
